Every Steve McQueen Movie Ranked Worst To Best

6. Education (2020)

12 Years A Slave
BBC

The most personal instalment of the Small Axe series, Education follows young Black student Kingsley (a sensitive Kenyah Sandy) who fails an IQ test, is branded a "disruptive influence", and then placed in a school for kids with "special needs."

As the film unfolds and Kingsley's fierce mother Agnes (Sharlene Whyte) learns that these schools are nothing more than tools in the education system's unofficial but prolific segregation policy, Kingsley attempts to confront his new life and the racial discrimination of the schools is tackled head-on by his mother.

In his youth, McQueen, like Kingsley, was diagnosed with dyslexia, and sent to a class populated by students the school board were uninterested in helping.

Throughout Education, McQueen's experiences in the flawed school system are used to striking effect. The film may be short, but its emotional impact and eye-opening message makes it the most tender part of the anthology, as well as a pitch-perfect finale to the series.
