If you ever wanted to see a Spielberg movie with fart jokes, here you go. A thoroughly charming, visually gorgeous adaptation of Roald Dahl's classic novel that's perfectly suited to the director's sensibilities, The BFG may have flopped at the box office, but that says nothing of how terrifically assembled an adventure it is.

Mark Rylance is perfectly cast as the titular character, aided by some bleeding-edge visual effects - which some quarters dismissed as uncannily creepy for some reason - and a delightfully weird plot, which ends up at Buckingham Palace of all places.

Young Ruby Barnhill is also quite terrific in this, so fingers crossed the film flopping didn't hurt her prospects too much.
