Every Steven Spielberg Movie Ranked From Worst To Best
14. Bridge Of Spies (2015)
At once extremely well-crafted and yet not quite as emotionally engaging as you want it to be, Bridge of Spies sees Spielberg knocking out another historical drama that everyone's dad will love.
Beautifully capturing the essence of Cold War espionage, the film works as well as it does largely thanks to the terrific two-hander between an Oscar-winning Mark Rylance - as Soviet spy Rudolf Abel - and Tom Hanks, who channels Gregory Peck as a lawyer committed to defending the man at great cost to himself (amusingly enough, the story was almost a movie starring Peck back in 1965).
Though it's not a terribly exciting affair, a surging, understated script from the Coen brothers ensures it's always an intellectual, character-driven delight. It doesn't quite nail its desired emotion, but perhaps this is merely because we're conditioned to expect more showy, bleeding-heart work from the director.
