Every Steven Spielberg Movie Ranked From Worst To Best

13. Munich (2005)

A harrowing and deeply engrossing account of the Munich massacre at the 1972 Summer Olympics and everything that followed, Munich sees out its brutal 163 minute runtime with less trouble than expected thanks to a fantastic ensemble cast - has Eric Bana ever been better? - and a thoughtful approach to the nature of violence and terrorism.

Yes, it should probably be shorter, and the climactic sex scene - in which Bana's anguished slow-mo thrusting is intercut with flashbacks to the massacre - is probably one of the director's most tonally off-kilter moments, eliciting more giggles than horror. However, as a live-wire spy-thriller, it's nothing if not a movie for our times, no matter that the events took place almost a half-century ago.
