Every Steven Spielberg Movie Ranked From Worst To Best

26. War Horse (2011)

Beautifully mounted with a talented ensemble cast of humans and animals to boot, this adaptation of Michael Morpurgo’s 1982 novel and the hit 2007 play only fitfully captures their heart-on-sleeve emotion.

A sweet film memorable largely for only one single sequence - the terrific No Man's Land set-piece - War Horse is ably helmed, but the script is too contrived and sentimental for its own good.

Ill-advisedly touted as an awards picture when it would've been better-marketed purely towards the family crowd, the film aims broadly and nails the tear-jerking moments you'd expect Spielberg to. In large part due to its aggressively melodramatic tone, however, it's insane to believe this only came out barely six years ago.
