11. Gray Matter

Shudder

A widowed father turns to the bottle as a means of coping with his grief and depression, frequently reassuring his young son that one day soon he’ll sober up. The father’s alcoholism gradually materialises into something much more sinister, transforming him into something with a bigger, more unquenchable thirst – for more than booze.

From the season's concluding entry to its first: Gray Matter is a weak and unpromising start to the series. Adapted from a Stephen King short story (not the strongest one they could've chosen), this tale of a selfish and neglectful alcoholic is clearly autobiographical in part. It's a shame that the result is so bland and unremarkable, mainly because this is the story that features the teased contributions of genre legends Adrienne Barbeau (the most memorable part of Creepshow's The Crate) and Saw's Tobin Bell. It does have a fairly good build-up, but the payoff is ultimately a disappointment.

Thankfully, this largely forgettable segment didn't set the standard for those to follow.

Olivia Bradbury hasn't written a bio just yet, but if they had... it would appear here.
