Because of their popularity, it's rare for a Studio Ghibli movie to be labelled a cult favourite, but that's exactly what Miyazaki's exciting fantasy-action hit Porco Rosso is.

Following a weary WWII pilot who gets turned into an anthropomorphic pig, Porco Rosso features some of Ghibli's most technical and action-packed sequences, with much of the film taking place in the skies.

With allusions to the Gulf War and focus on Miyazaki's distaste for violence, the film soars with its animation, but reaches a new level of brilliance where its enrapturing eponymous character is concerned.

"I'd rather be a pig than a fascist" remains one of Ghibli's most iconic lines, and from its awesome animated dogfights to the compelling way it condenses big ideas into a lovable, family-friendly tale, it's no wonder Porco Rosso endures as a cult gem.
