14. Whisper Of The Heart (1995)

Studio Ghibli

The first Ghibli production not helmed by Miyazaki or Takahata, Whisper of the Heart was directed by Yoshifumi Kondō, who tragically passed away just three years later.

The story of a young woman who becomes enthralled by a boy who shares her love for books, Whisper of the Heart is a straightforward but deeply personal odyssey into young love and memory, complete with complex characters and affecting twists.

Mixing fantastical elements with a striking, mature coming-of-age centre, the drama sings with a loving appreciation of human connectivity and curiosity, whilst John Denver's infectiously catchy hit "Country Roads" leads an iconic soundtrack.

One of Ghibli's most empathetic projects, audience appreciation of Whisper of the Heart has grown massively over the years, and its charming humanist themes and rich characters make it abundantly clear why.
