Every Studio Ghibli Movie Ranked Worst To Best
18. Pom Poko (1994)
Written and directed by Takahata, based on an idea from Miyazaki, Pom Poko is one of Studio Ghibli's most impactful films, a rich and absurd journey that takes vital aim at the cost of urbanisation.
Environmentalist themes link many of Ghibli's finest projects, but they've never been richer than they are here, as a brave group of raccoon dogs team-up to save their land from encroaching human settlers.
Takahata's complex, confrontational script makes light work of Pom Poko's heavier themes, making it a film as timely as it is easy-going and joyous.
There are times where the humour doesn't quite hit the notes intended, and it's a bit too long, but the fantastical celebration of nature and condemnation of industry is still one of the studio's most important, gutsy, and passionate projects.
