Every Movie Trailer From Super Bowl 50 Ranked From Worst To Best
9. The Secret Life Of Pets
Illumination Animation is forever going to be tainted for inflicting the Minions on the world, although at least in 2016 they're trying to expand their net by bringing us The Secret Life Of Pets. There's a real whiff of Pixar to the idea behind the film - "The Secret Life Of..." could be the title for pretty much everyone of the Emeryville Titans' masterpieces - and the first teaser look like Illumination were actually upping their game with some astute observations. Nope! Like Despicable Me before it this film looks to be playing at a very low level, with its representation of that "Secret Life" being chugging from a toilet bowl and a poodle headbanging to metal. It's the sort of one-note ideas that probably sound cool in the writers room, but on screen feel desperate. I'm willing to bet the whole thing is designed to have multimedia marketability - that'll be why the animals are all different shapes and styles, with an edge towards plushie-friendly rotund. The Big Game Spot isn't awful, it just feels rather desperate to make you like it (like the pets it focuses on). Of course, Pixar trailers are likewise notoriously lacklustre, but we've actually got reason to trust them. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hz8VOiTgcW4
