Ryan Coogler delivers arguably the strongest solo debut to date with this uncommonly provocative, unexpected pop-culture phenomenon.

Loaded with pointed social commentary while also serving up tenacious action sequences and knowing humour, Black Panther is one of the most unique and singular MCU movies to date.

The visual effects can't always support the overall vision, sadly, but the world-building is immaculate, Michael B. Jordan's villain Erik Killmonger is an all-timer, and a number of the MCU's most complained-about elements are wilfully sidestepped.

It's not perfect by any means, but a remarkable achievement and, with its insane $1.34 billion box office to date, is proof perfect to stuffy Hollywood execs that, yes, people aren't averse to seeing predominantly black stories on the big screen.
