3. Avengers: Infinity War (2018)

The most epic and ambitious superhero movie in history largely delivered on expectations, presenting the Mad Titan Thanos (Josh Brolin) as the protagonist of a thrillingly action-packed, oft-haunting and yet totally hilarious superhero classic.

Giving the MCU one of its most intriguing villains to date alongside live-wire set-pieces, marvellous character interactions and a pace that's almost too snappy for its own good, Infinity War suitably subverted expectations while still delivering the epic showdown fans demanded.

Naturally, Infinity War's just the start of a two-part story, so how it'll ultimately be received will probably depend somewhat on how Avengers 4 resolves it all. For the moment, though, it's mind-boggling proof of just how talented the Russos are at not only juggling literally dozens of characters at once, but also expertly melding tones that aren't always complimentary.
