Every Tim Burton Film Ranked From Worst To Best

6. Sweeney Todd The Demon Barber of Fleet Street

Edward Scissorhands, like Tim Burton, just can't reach out and touch others
Paramount Pictures

This phenomenal musical created by the legendary Stephen Sondheim started as a comic opera that presented a humorous outlook on the dark tale. Eventually, however, this adaptation generated a fascinatingly dark and gothic reputation for the story, which is now how its revivals tend to display themselves. Burton was the perfect person to bring this dark stage play to life, as he not only made a great film but reinvented the vibe of the source material.

Sweeney Todd is a barber formerly known as Benjamin Barker who returns to London after being sent away by the malicious Judge Turpin so he could steal his wife. The titular anti-hero returns to enact revenge and save his daughter from the clutches of this evil political figure, becoming a serial killer in the process.

The score has this running theme of death to it that is persistent in every aspect of the production. Like Sleepy Hollow it generates a film that is almost entirely devoid of colour, except for the bright red sight of blood.

Sweeney Todd is a movie musical like no other, and not only does justice to the source material but in many ways improves it.
