The Weinstein Company

This historical exploration of art and manipulation is a more subtle and exciting look at the abilities of this filmmaker. While he often takes on subjects of excessive fantasy, this film is grounded in reality and makes a compelling look on a historical figure. Ultimately, its departure from the norm makes it stand out nicely amongst his library.

The film tells the compelling story of Margaret Keane, and her struggle to gain artistic recognition for her incredibly popular artworks in the 1960s from her controlling husband. The film is carried by two brilliant lead performances from Amy Adams and Christoph Waltz and is a fascinating look not only into the art world but the state of a toxic marriage.

It has a charming 50s/60s era vibe to it that makes it really interesting to watch. Sadly one of its drawbacks is that the acting and narrative can often delve into melodrama, which makes it feel a little cliche.

Despite some pitfalls, the movie is a great watch and tells a fascinating tale that otherwise might have never been told.
