Every Tim Burton Film Ranked From Worst To Best
11. Sleepy Hollow
Sleepy Hollow is a fascinating adaptation of the classic tale of the headless horseman and has just as many good decisions as it does strange. The title knows exactly how to generate an atmosphere that is both ridiculous and horrifying at the same time, and this blend makes the picture leap out of the screen at you.
The story follows the investigation of a round of beheadings in the town of Sleepy Hollow. Constable Ichabod Crane makes his way to the village to find the culprit and uncovers the twisted and evil headless horseman. The plot ends up taking some wild and convoluted directions which take it into a goofy territory that ultimately benefits and also ruins the film.
The project feels akin to Hammer horror, with the style being wholly similar, and a significant focus on the bright colouring of the blood contrasting to a very colourless set and costumes. This makes the film feel like a love letter to a lost style of horror, but also holds it back in regards to the scares, as it also delivers a throwback plot that often feels cartoonish.
Finally, Christopher Walken as the headless horseman has to be noted as an incredibly fun but strange decision which makes the movie entirely worth watching even if only for him.
