18. American Made (2017)

Tom Cruise Interview With The Vampire
Universal

If a case had to made for the most surprisingly good addition to Cruise's filmography, a compelling argument could be made for his 2017 thriller American Made.

Starring as Barry Seal, a real-life pilot who somehow found himself working for both the Medellin Cartel and CIA in the 1980s, Cruise finds himself in a role perfectly suited to his talents.

Not only does American Made benefit from Doug Liman's fun and frenzied direction, but it allows Cruise to stretch his comedy muscles in a role that finds him working as an unsure hero painfully out of his element. Surprisingly light and constantly engaging, it's a welcome breath of fresh air to Cruise's recent output.
