It's easy to just lump all of Bay's Transformers movies together, but the 2007 original actually had a little more going for it.

Yes, the goofball humour is still there in abundance, but the "boy and his pet" appeal of Sam Witwicky's bond with Bumblebee is really quite endearing, even if it clashes somewhat with the hormone-infused tone of it all.

The action has aged spectacularly well and is decidedly less busy than its more "ambitious" successors, while the plot is streamlined for simplicity's sake, making this decidedly easier to tolerate, if not actually enjoy.

Bay's usual excesses are still there, but considering the direction the franchise took thereafter, this is a positively restrained effort.

It was also fortunate enough to be the first of the Bayformers films, and therefore the mere mention of such didn't yet elicit groans from millions.
