Every Twist In The Saw Franchise - Ranked From Worst To Best
6. Rigg's Test Was To Do Nothing, Hoffman Is The New Apprentice (Saw IV)
Saw IV was the first film in the series where the twists really started to feel desperate and underwhelming.
First off, there's the milder revelation that it's actually taking place at the same time as Saw III.
More importantly, the ending also reveals arguably Jigsaw's most unfair and unconvincing test to date, that Officer Rigg (Lyriq Bent) is being tested because he's an over-eager hero who...doesn't check doors before opening them. OK?
As such, Rigg realises at film's end that he could've saved everyone by literally doing nothing, which seems like a pretty harsh punishment for someone simply trying to help people, ultimately leading to the deaths of both himself and Detective Matthews (Donnie Wahlberg).
The bigger twist, however, reveals Jigsaw's second apprentice to be Detective Hoffman (Costas Mandylor), which is really just a transparent attempt to keep the series going despite Hoffman being a totally unremarkable and uninteresting character.
