On the other side of the coin we have 1963's The Sword in the Stone, a not-bad animated riff on the King Arthur legend that, honestly, could probably be improved with a contemporary re-do.

This remake will be foregoing a theatrical release in favour of a debut on Disney's new streaming service Disney+, which given the tendency for King Arthur movies to flop at the box office makes a ton of sense.

Bryan Cogman (Game of Thrones) has written the script while Juan Carlos Fresnadillo (28 Weeks Later) is directing, a creative teaming which suggests this new version will be a little less kid-friendly than the original animation.

Hopefully it'll hew closer to T.H. White's source material while attempting to appeal more to older teens (possibly ditching the musical elements in the process).

This is one of the few live-action remakes which would benefit from diverging significantly from its relatively unremarkable predecessor. There's actually a decent amount of potential here, even if the streaming release might dictate a lower budget than if it were aiming for cinemas.

The Sword in the Stone plans to release on Disney+ sometime in 2019.
