Every Wes Anderson Film Ranked Worst To Best

8. The Darjeeling Limited

The Darjeeling Limited follows three brothers who have grown apart and all find themselves feeling adrift after the sudden death of their father. While there are genuinely affecting moments in the film that will resonate with anyone who has lost a parent, the plot itself can sometimes end up feeling just as unfocused and drifting as the brothers.

Their search for their mother, who has retreated to a Christian convent in rural India, does help anchor the film somewhat but Anderson is clearly out of his element shooting in vast exterior sets that he cannot carefully choreograph before time.

While the first half of the film is mostly spent inside an intricately designed train, with all of the pastel colouring and whimsy that Anderson devotees will expect, the second follows the brothers trudging through identical looking areas of rural India. It’s in these sections that the movie loses that unique flair that makes Anderson’s movies stand out from the crowd.

With that said, it’s still well worth a look if you’ve ever felt that strange mixture of irritation and unconditional love that comes with having siblings.

Owen Davies hasn't written a bio just yet, but if they had... it would appear here.
