Every Wilhelm Scream In The Star Wars Saga
4. The Empire Strikes Back (1980)
Widely regarded as the best film of the entire Star Wars saga, The Empire Strikes Back has it all: lightsaber duels, space worms, sister kisses and Lando Calrissian (Billy Dee Williams).
From the opening sequence on Hoth, the heroes find themselves spread wide across the galaxy, Luke training with Yoda (Frank Oz) on Dagobah and Han and Leia being lured into The Empire's trap. It culminates in Luke losing a hand and Han being frozen in carbonite - an ending which gives even Revenge of the Sith a run for its money in all-time low points - but is nonetheless a cinematic space opera masterpiece.
In Bespin's Cloud City, as Han is about to be sealed in carbonite, Chewbacca rebels, striking back at the surrounding stormtroopers and throwing them from the platform they are gathered on, while Darth Vader and Boba Fett look on. The last of the troopers to fall lets out the Wilhelm scream and a strong tradition of loyal screaming henchmen lives on.
For an extra piece of trivia, in the first act of the film Han Solo ignites Luke's lightsaber on the snow planet Hoth, in order to cut open Luke's tauntaun, pop him in amongst the beast's viscera and save his life. Though not exactly a hidden detail, Han was the first and only non-force sensitive character to use a saber until Finn (John Boyega) wielded the very same weapon against Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) in 2017's The Force Awakens.
