10. Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets Of Dumbledore (2022)

Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them
Warner Bros. Pictures

The nicest thing that can be said of The Secrets of Dumbledore is that it's slightly better than The Crimes of Grindelwald. Executed with the same lifeless direction and sad, grainy aesthetic, the overwrought threequel is more of the same, only with marginally better action and Mads Mikkelsen in place of Depp.

Based around Dumbledore and Grindelwald's turbulent relationship, the film's biggest issue is its story, which causes more plotholes in the franchise's mythology, and despite constantly building up tension never capitalises on its emotional potential.

A movie in which numerous characters are bafflingly side-lined - in this film's case, Katherine Waterston's Tina - and others, like Redmayne's Newt, feel incredibly out of place, The Secrets of Dumbledore seems both narratively pointless and forced to completion, featuring none of the series' otherwise entertaining trademarks.

Granted, Mikkelsen and Jude Law (better here than in the previous film) deserve some credit for carrying the melodrama, but its lacklustre finale and thin emotional resonance leave it stranded amongst the rubble of a once-great franchise.
