Evil Dead: 10 Grooviest Franchise Moments So Far

1. Groovy

How could there be any groovier moment than when Ash uses the word groovy for no discernible reason? In one of the most baffling moments from Evil Dead II, Ash creates this complicated device that allows him to use a chainsaw for a hand. It's the classic trope of the hero suiting up for the final battle, and the camera slowly pans in as the music swells as if to say, "it's on now!"

In any normal film, the music would peak and then we'd cut to the next scene. Not in Evil Dead II, though. Instead, once the camera reaches Ash's face, the music suddenly stops and Ash just says, "Groovy."

There is no apparent reason for him to say this, and it's not as if either movie has established that this is his catchphrase. In the middle of a dramatic moment, our protagonist just decides to cap off a scene by abruptly saying something ridiculous. Why not?

It feels like something you'd see on the blooper reel, where the actor decides to make everyone on set laugh by intentionally being silly.

So many other directors wouldn't have gone for this goofy flourish, but by embracing moments like these, Raimi crafted a trilogy that truly stands the test of time and will live on for decades to come.
