For how goofy the Evil Dead movies can be, they really are impressive works of filmmaking. Look no further than the splendid long shot at the beginning of Evil Dead II. Raimi had already put us in the point of view of the "force" during the first Evil Dead, with shots of the camera flying through the forrest, but he really outdoes himself with the sequel.

In one of the very first sequences, the camera flies in up a cliff and towards Ash's car, so he starts driving in reverse while the camera keeps up with him the entire time. The point of view shot proceeds to follow Ash's car, go through the front and back windshield and chase him into the house.

Once there, it breaks down a door, follows Ash in and out of several rooms, and finally starts moving in reverse through the front door and back into the woods. This whole thing includes one uninterrupted shot that lasts about a full minute.

Thinking about how Raimi would even accomplish a feat like this is absolutely mind boggling. It's like the horror equivalent of a West Wing walk and talk. In so many similarly nasty '80s gorefests, the filmmaking itself is rather flat, but Raimi's flair for the dramatic takes The Evil Dead to the next level.
