Evil Dead: 10 Grooviest Franchise Moments So Far

8. Ash Vs. Evil Hand

Sometime between the production of Evil Dead I and II, Sam Raimi realized that Bruce Campbell is the man. Campbell is thrust into center stage in the sequel as the only actor in much of the movie, and he's given plenty of opportunity to show off his acting chops.

If you've ever doubted that Campbell is a great actor, check out this scene when Ash's own hand turns against him. He nails it to the point that you forget that the actor hasn't genuinely lost control of his body.

You truly believe this hand is a completely separate entity, especially when it hits him with a plate and then smashes him down into the sink. It's also darkly amusing precisely because we believe we're watching a man battle against his own arms, and Raimi embraces the slapstick potential in that.

Of course, this also leads to the iconic moment of Ash cutting off his hand with a chainsaw, which would later be replicated in the 2013 remake. Blood spurts everywhere and fills the frame, Ash screams in pain, but he also laughs maniacally because he has defeated his opponent.

In a few seconds, this demonstrates everything Evil Dead enthusiasts love in the series: lots of blood, creative cinematography, excellent acting, and an appropriate amount of humor.
