Evil Dead Rise Review: 6 Ups & 4 Downs

1. The Oscar-Worthy Sound Design

Evil Dead Rise
Warner Bros.

As great as Evil Dead Rise looks, its most technically accomplished aspect is unquestionably the incredible sound design, which in a just world would be courting serious Oscar consideration. But alas, the Academy hates horror.

This thing simply sounds fantastic - from the thunderous boom of the Book of the Dead's infamous incantation to every subtle, dialled-in piece of sound editing during the movie's most unsettling moments, it's clear that so much work went into making everything sound tactile and terrifying.

It certainly makes an argument for seeing Evil Dead Rise on the big screen - the directional surround sound, where Deadite voices can often be heard on the peripheries of the soundscape, ensure you're unlikely to have the same experience at home.

Sound design is often underestimated for its ability to aid our immersion in a film, but in this case you'll regularly be made aware of just how acutely it contributes to the movie's thick mood.
