Evil Dead Rise Review: 6 Ups & 4 Downs

A solid entry into horror's most consistent franchise.

Evil Dead Rise
Warner Bros.

It's been a whole damn decade, but Evil Dead fans finally have a new movie to savour. Despite 2013's surprisingly solid remake performing well at the box office, a sequel never materialised, and ever since fans have had to make do with the (admittedly pretty great) Ash vs. Evil Dead TV series.

But there's no denying the thirst for another big-screen Evil Dead offering, and while it was originally intended to release direct to HBO Max, Warner Bros. ultimately had enough faith in Evil Dead Rise to give it a theatrical bow.

It's far from a perfect movie, but it's nevertheless easy to appreciate why the savagely satisfying fifth Evil Dead film is getting the multiplex treatment - it's a wildly bloody rollercoaster ride that ensures the franchise has delivered five entries (six if you include the TV show) without a single dud.

Critics have been tripping over themselves to hail Evil Dead Rise as one of the best horror films of the year, and while the praise might be a tad overblown, there's certainly a quality slice of gamy horror to behold here, and one that makes for a fun night out at the movies.

But first, here's what it doesn't quite get right...
