Evil Dead Rise Review: 6 Ups & 4 Downs

3. The Hit & Miss Fan Service

Evil Dead Rise
Warner Bros.

Unsurprisingly Evil Dead Rise has a ton of nods to the series' history, and while many of them are sure to raise a smile with fans - such as a pizza delivery box from a chain called "Henrietta's" - there are others which feel a little too ham-fisted and fan-serving for their own good.

Easter eggs are great and all, but there are moments that feel a little too wink-wink in relying on what came before - especially a few lines of dialogue and definitely the inevitable, somewhat contrived appearance of a certain weapon.

It definitely never devolves into eye-rolling "member berries" or feels like it's coming from anything but a loving place for the franchise, but considering Bruce Campbell's Ash is long gone at this point, it'd sure be nice to properly move past his legacy rather than continually peer back at it.
