Exact Reasons These 10 Sequels Were Never Made
7. Nazis Aren't Funny (And The Cost) - Who Framed Roger Rabbit 2
We've almost had a few different versions of a Roger Rabbit sequel, but the original is the most important - and the most interesting for its backstory.
Back in 1989, Steven Spileberg discussed the possibility of a sequel with JJ Abrams writing and Robert Zemeckis producing, but that ended up turning into Roger Rabbit: The Toon Platoon - a prequel of sorts set in 1941. It would have seen animated characters teaming up with Roger in a platoon sent into Nazi-occupied Europe to rescue Roger's girlfriend - struggling actress Jessica Krupnik.
It's a wild idea, but unfortunately, Spielberg left the project because of his discomfort at satirizing Nazis after directing Schindler's List. Over the years, it then went through rewrites and even got to the animations test stages, but a combination of the studio not liking the chosen medium, confusingly given the success of the original, and then balking at the rising costs meant it hit the scrapheap.
