Exact Reasons These 10 Sequels Were Never Made
6. Tomorrowland Made No Money - TRON 3
For a while there, it looked like we were going to get a third TRON movie after TRON: Legacy gave the world some good ideas, a great soundtrack and a very, very smooth-faced fake Jeff Bridges. Even after that movie's uninspiring reception at the box office (and with critics), plans rumbled on for a follow-up for way longer than you might have thought.
As recently as late 2017, Jared Leto was still talking about starring in it, but star Garrett Hedlund seems to have different news on that front.
He played Sam Flynn in the sequel and according to him the threequel's cancellation - which actually came around 2015, officially - was partly because Brad Bird's Tomorrowland underperformed at the box office. The greatest tragedy there, of course, is that Tomorrowland is horribly underrated and deserves way more attention.
In an interview with MTV's Happy Sad Confused podcast, Hedlund revealed the logic:
"When the next TRON was supposed to start - we were greenlit and ready to go - and then [Disney] had troubles with how Tomorrowland did. And I think they asked them to give them like a hundred reasons why they should do [TRON 3]."
