You may already know the story of the planned Forest Gump sequel, because it sits right up there with Gladiator 2's bonkers Nick Cave pitch for strange sequels that almost happened. But you may not know why it didn't happen - and it's nothing to do with the quality of the idea, really.

Just as the first film was picking up its 6 Oscars (something that continues to madden the world sometimes), author Winston Groom released his Gump & Co sequel, which was very much more of the same. It was, inevitably, quickly considered for a sequel, partly because Tom Hanks wasn't keen on besmirching the legacy of his most critically acclaimed movie.

But it was also down to something more as screenwriter Eric Roth revealed that he finished the script one day before 9/11, and after setting up a meeting with director Robert Zemeckis and Hanks, it was decided that it simply wasn't relevant to the world any more.
