Fan-Casting 7 Big Batman Villains For Ben Affleck's Solo Movies

1. Sean Penn As Penguin

Everyone always assumes that Penguin has to be fat, bald and short, but the specifics of his appearance can easily be changed as long as his key traits remain intact. Penguin has a brash personality with no heart underneath, and he can demand respect without saying a single word - and Sean Penn is the man to bring all that to the big screen.

He's even played a gangster before, in the aptly titled Gangster Squad. It's not his finest role or even his finest movie, but he was tough-as-nails, ruthless and intimidating, and could easily have passed for a version of Penguin by simply lifting that performance and dropping it in a Batman movie.

Penn also has a coolness about him too, which would be an interesting element to bring to the character. Penguin is traditionally on the wacky, eccentric side (Batman Returns, anyone?), but this would need to be toned down opposite Ben Affleck's Batman, and Penn can certainly play level-headed when he needs to.

Think a 'Jack Nicholson in The Departed' type; a character with that slight playful edge that's still imposing and menacing. A drop of Penn's loud performance in Gangster Squad combined with his other, more subdued roles would be the perfect mix to convincingly kick some of Bat-ass.

Danny has been with WhatCulture for almost nine years, and is currently Doctor Who Editor and WhoCulture Channel Manager, overseeing all of WhatCulture's Whoniverse coverage. He has been writing and video editing for 10+ years, and first got a taste for content creation after making his own Doctor Who trailers and uploading them to YouTube (they're admittedly a bit rusty by today's standards). If you need someone to recite every Doctor Who episode in order or to tell you about the making of 1988's Remembrance of the Daleks, Danny is the person to ask.
