Fantastic Beasts: 10 Rumours That Proved To Be Bullsh*t

9. It's Going To Feature Professor McGonagall

Back when the very first announcement trailer for Fantastic Beasts dropped, astute fans thought they had sussed out a major throwback role. The hype is understandable - take a look at the announcement trailer and skip to the one minute twenty mark. The exasperated voice which exclaims "Mr Scamander!" sounds a hell of a lot like Maggie Smith's Minerva.

This voice clip gave rise to the rumour that Professor McGonagall had a substantial role in the film, though there were multiple explanations as to what that might be. Some reckoned McGonagall would be the teacher to have Newt expelled from Hogwarts, a rumour which made utterly no sense given the fact we know she was born in 1935 and Beasts is set during 1926.

Others reasoned Smith would be playing McGonagall's mother, Isobel Ross. In the end, the rumour turned out to be as nonsensical as it initially sounded. Still, the voice in the trailer really does sound like Minerva.
