Fantastic Beasts: 28 Easter Eggs & References You Must See
27. Gellert Grindelwald
Though this is clearly a film about Fantastic Beasts and Newt Scamander, we're invited early to realise that it's only part of a much bigger, much more important story.
The film opens with an ominous shot of several wizards being evaporated away into nothing and the reveal of the back of a head, complete with 1920s gangster slick-back and undercut hairstyle. We're then quickly shown a montage of newspaper clippings setting the scene: that Gellert Grindelwald is active in Europe, wiping out his enemies and setting the wizarding world into a panic.
Incidentally, given the timing here, it's clear that that devastating magic he wields - which we've never really seen the likes of (even Voldemort didn't kill like that) - is thanks to the Elder Wand being in his possession.
