19. Brian's Ridiculous Absence
Paul Walker's devastating death obviously put the series in an impossible decision with regard to his character, and Furious 7 handled it with perfect grace by having Brian "retire" from the Family.
That's all well and good, but by keeping Brian on the periphery with each passing movie, his absence feels like an increasingly ridiculous distraction.
Because Mia hasn't followed Brian's lead and also entered retirement - presumably because it'd be unfair to Jordana Brewster - the continued excuses for Brian's lack of presence are themselves becoming problematically flimsy.
In this movie, while Mia and Little B are attacked, where the hell is Brian? Even when Mia tells Jakob she's going to sit tight with Brian, Jakob tells her that's precisely the move everybody would expect - which is really just an eye-rollingly contrived way to keep Brian out of the picture again.
It's a tough problem to solve, for sure, but considering Mia was only in this movie for a few minutes anyway, it just might be time to have her ride off into the sunset forever.
