Fifty Shades Of Grey: 10 Much Better Choices Than Charlie Hunnam

9. Ryan Gosling

Ryan Gosling He may have made a relatively rare misstep with Only God Forgives - in which he doesn't act AT ALL - but Gosling still exudes that intangible cool that would have translated nicely across to Grey. He is also undoubtedly good-looking enough to carry the character, having built up a swooning fanbase from films like Crazy Stupid Love, and his slightly quirky coolness would have added an extra level of depth that a more typical acting choice could offer. Even more crucially, Gosling has the kind of acting chops that could have made the film so much more than the low-brow gimmick it will undoubtedly be reduced to by so-called "serious" critics who already want the film to be as comical a failure as Showgirls. His more careful career choices have shown that he has a penchant for complex characters, and those who have deeper elements to their personality. He emotes very well, breaking his calm, collected surface with moments of prickly emotion, as in Blue Valentine, or huge violence (as in Drive) and he could have convincingly conveyed both sides of Grey's character, while also boosting the serious credentials of the entire project.
