2. The Breaking Point For Her Is... Spanking?
Arguably the film's most ridiculous moment comes in its closing scene when, after the preceding two hours of Christian Grey talking about all the kinky stuff he's into and trying to get Ana to join in, she furiously leaves him for... well... doing some of that kinky stuff he was talking about. The entire film goes to lengths to show Christian's alleged darkside, and the two discuss, examine and debate the point in almost every single scene, pour over a contract that details exactly what he can do to her, and even do a few trial runs to ease her into it. Then, after he lashes her across the backside a few times, she suddenly decides she can't do this after all and leaves him. The scene is supposed to represent Ana's breaking point with Christian's lifestyle but, given the sorts of items on the menu for serious BDSM relationships, having her reach a point of no return for what's little more than spanking makes no sense. She's obviously keeping an open mind over the weird and wonderful toys that inhabit his playroom, but yet she balks at entry-level bondage? Ana could have saved us all some time if she'd just said no from the start.
