9. How Can You Just Replace A Journalist With An English Major?
The circumstances under which our two protagonists meet are pretty ropey from the get go, with Ana thrust into the role of unwitting journalist to fill in for her roommate who has taken ill. Taking a step back for a moment, Christian Grey is one of the most secretive and powerful men in the world, and somehow a girl writing for a college paper has managed to secure a sit-down face-to-face interview with him in the middle of the day. That noise you can here is every local journalist scoffing on their caramel lattes at the notion of getting that sort of access to someone in that position. Tragedy strikes however when Ana's roommate comes down with a severe case of "a bit of a cold" and can no longer do the interview. The notion of simply stuffing in some decongestants and battling through the 15 minute interview obviously too much of a stretch for her, so her plan instead is to send Ana in her place. Not one of her colleagues, not someone on her course, she entrusts this vital piece of reporting to a shy girl who studies English and doesn't say much.
