Though he has a lot in common with other great idiot animal characters like Ed the hyena from The Lion King, Gerald the sea lion (who will probably go down as a lot of people's favourite new addition to Finding Dory) actually owes his look and name to a more human character.
The monobrow he sports is the same design as that of Baby Gerald, Maggie Simpson's nemesis from The Simpsons. Obviously the name follows the brows.
The Simpsons and Pixar have a close relationship, sharing talent like Brad Bird, David Silverman and Jim Reardon.
