First Look: Mulder and Scully together in THE X-FILES 2

In an interesting article published just a few hours ago in USA Today, Chris Carter the creator of the extremely popular X-Files show claims that the new movie currently well into production will indeed be a stand-alone flick (with no ties to any ongoing storylines) but actually goes one further and says they have dropped the "conspiracy mythology" of the original show. Just what the hell does that mean? I will let you ponder that whilst you look over our first glimpse of Mulder and Scully back together and we will try and answer the mystery below.

Just what do they mean when they say "dump" the "mythology"? Carter speaks as if the Alien invasion has been dropped and indeed that the film will feature no Aliens and no ties to the show or the 1998 movie. Excuse me if I'm being ignorant here but then what the hell is the point in doing an X-FILES movie that's not an X-FILES movie? Anyone got a theory on this? I'm sure the truth must be out there...
