First Man Review: 8 Ups & 2 Downs

5. Justin Hurwitz's Oscar-Worthy Score

Justin Hurwitz has now provided the musical score for all four of Chazelle's movies, and after scooping Best Original Score and Best Original Song Oscars for La La Land, he should probably clear his mantle for the possibility that First Man will net him a third gold statue.

Hurwitz's score in this movie is nothing short of sublime, melding electronic and orchestral elements together in a manner reminiscent of Hans Zimmer, to the extent that aspects of the score will surely earn comparisons to Zimmer's for Interstellar.

The score's stand-out track is unquestionably "The Landing", a slow-building piece which lends the Moon landing sequence tremendous visceral weight, not dissimilar from how "No Time for Caution" is used in Interstellar's docking sequence.

Though Oscar season is really only just beginning, a mighty contender would be needed to knock Hurwitz off his perch, because this is God-tier composing right here.
