8. It's A Remake Pretending To Be A Sequel

Flatliners 2017
Columbia

Ahead of the film's release, Sony and director Niels Arden Oplev insisted that the new movie was a sequel to the 1990 cult classic, rather than a mere remake or reboot of it.

However, now that the movie's out in the wild, it's abundantly clear that they were lying through their teeth, and while certainly not a verbatim facsimile of the original, it doesn't exactly colour much outside the lines either.

From having the exact same title as the original to occasionally regurgitating slivers of dialogue ("Today's a good day to die!") from it, it mostly covers the same beats as the previous film and has no discernible link to it that would indicate it's a sequel.
