Flatliners Review: 3 Ups & 8 Downs
7. The CGI Is Absolutely Atrocious
Perhaps it wasn't so smart to attempt to make a $19 million thriller that requires a ton of fancy visual effects?
The various hallucinations that the five central medical students encounter often results in garish CGI filling up the screen, making the film look exceedingly cheap and even visually inferior to its predecessor from almost three decades ago.
While some CGI is to be expected, it was a huge mistake to make it such an important aspect of the film's style, as it's frequently laughable and detracts from any actual atmosphere or suspense Oplev is otherwise trying to muster.
