Flatliners Review: 3 Ups & 8 Downs

6. There Are Too Many Jump Scares

Flatliners Nina Dobrev
Columbia

Perhaps the most irritating addition to the new movie that wasn't overly present in the original is the abundance of jump scares.

As the characters come face-to-face with their post-resuscitation hallucinations, Oplev makes excessive use of loud noises, essentially causing the film to feel like a cheap horror flick in ways the original never did.

In addition, the hallucinations themselves lack the eccentric weirdness of the original and tend more towards cliched horror tropes from the last decade-or-so, but without any of the self-awareness that could've actually made it fun.

These jumps are among the worst moments in the movie, because they're both incredibly predictable and annoying.
