1. There's No Reason For It To Exist
More than anything, though, there's just not a reason that this movie needed to be made. The original film was a relatively modest success that didn't spawn a franchise or anything, and there's not much apparent franchise potential with this new movie either, so what was the point?
Perhaps the new film's abundance of jump scares was a case of Sony hoping they could tap into the horror market and pull off a low-budget hit. Going by early box office estimates, though, that doesn't seem likely to happen.
One simply has to wonder who this film was made for, really: it has little tangible link to the original that would entice long-time fans, and isn't exactly tracking to connect with younger audiences either.
As mostly-terrible as the film is, it does manage to pull off a few inspired moments of promise, so here they are...
