Frozen 2: 10 Key Questions You Should Be Asking
8. How Will The Mythological Elements Be Used?
The presentation at the Annecy Festival only discussed the opening of Frozen 2 (Don’t expect any third act spoilers here!), but it featured one especially significant reveal.
The prologue promoted at Annecy showed Anna and Elsa as children, hearing a story about how their father visited a mysterious forest. There he accidentally disrupted an elemental force, which led to a disconnect between the kingdom of Arendelle and the four elements. This confirms fan theories that earth, fire air and water would play a key role in the narrative but generates numerous unanswered questions.
The addition of this mythology will really expand the Frozen universe, but the team should avoid trying to explain everything. Even if we don’t get a Frozen 3, there should be enough intrigue to keep the fans talking for years to come.
One of the biggest risks Frozen 2 is taking is the decision to explore the question of “How Did Elsa get her powers?”, as the only information we learned about Elsa’s ice powers in the first movie was the fact she was born with them. Giving Elsa’s ability to control snow and ice a clear origin could make her gift seem a lot less magical.
Then again, if it's done well, it will deepen her character and emphasise her status as a truly unique and special Disney lead. Frozen’s iconic status has always been based on its willingness to take risks, and this is one that could either yield brilliant results or backfire badly.
