Frozen 2: 10 Key Questions You Should Be Asking

5. Who Will The Antagonists Be?

One of the biggest weak spots of the original film was the two villainous characters. The pompous and prejudiced Duke of Weselton was too ridiculous to seem like a viable antagonist, whilst Prince Hans was a brilliant idea (What if Prince Charming had an ulterior motive for being so unrealistically perfect?) handled in a rather flat and contrived manner.

Don't expect either of them to have a prominent role this time around. Weselton’s hatred of magic and Hans’s opportunism are only effective when Elsa is struggling to control her powers, and they no longer represent a viable threat now that she has established herself as queen. There is a possibility that Hans and Weselton could return for cameos, but it is unlikely that they will remain lead villains.

Instead, Elsa's opponents will generally be supernatural. With the team facing the daunting task of restoring the balance of the elements, it is likely that they will meet an antagonist who will provide a far greater challenge than Hans and Weselton would ever be capable of.

That said, Disney and Pixar have gravitated away from gloating, scheming villains in recent years, with some of their movies having no “bad guys” at all. For example, Moana reversed the “Surprise Villain” trope used in Frozen, by revealing that the fearsome lava monster Te Ka was actually a cursed goddess.

Ultimately, the only real requirement for Frozen 2’s antagonist is that they push Anna and Elsa’s abilities and relationship to the limit.
