Frozen 2: 10 Key Questions You Should Be Asking
4. How Will Anna And Elsa's Relationship Develop?
Although Anna and Elsa were not the first sisters in the Disney filmography, their relationship gave Frozen the feminist appeal which elevated it above other princess films. However, the numerous merchandise of the two together makes people forget that the Frozen was forced to keep Anna and Elsa apart for most of the runtime.
This made it all the sweeter when they reunited at the end but meant that we didn’t get to see them interact too often. Frozen Fever was only 5 minutes long and Olaf’s Frozen Adventure reduced Anna and Elsa to secondary roles, so Frozen 2 will be the most important exploration of their sibling dynamic to date. Hopefully, it will be given the development needed to cement Anna and Elsa’s iconic status.
A potential complication comes in the form of the #GiveElsaAGirlfriend online campaign. Given Elsa’s status as an LGBTQ+ icon, she would be an excellent choice for Disney’s first lesbian lead, and both Idina Menzel (Elsa’s voice actress) and Jennifer Lee have acknowledged the campaign. Unfortunately, creating a new love interest for Elsa and sufficiently exploring their romance would take time away from the sisterly bond at the heart of the Frozen franchise.
Therefore, it is likely that Elsa will remain single for now. However, the LGBTQ+ fans deserve some recognition, so the Frozen 2 team will have to think of a way to provide this whilst continuing to put Anna and Elsa’s loyalty to each other ahead of romantic conventions.
