And finally, here's a film that couldn't be more different from Ghost in the Shell if it tried. Hard to Be a God started shooting in 2000 and wasn't finally completed until 2013, some months after its director, Aleksei German, passed away, with his wife and son admirably finishing the edit.

Despite its impressive 94% Rotten Tomatoes score and consistent acclaim as one of the best sci-fi films of the last decade, the film has gone largely unknown among all but the most ardent art-house aficionados.

With justified comparisons to Andrei Tarkovsky's Stalker, this mesmerising 3-hour masterpiece about a group of Earthlings attempting to immerse themselves in a primitive alien culture is grotesque and suitably grueling. It's the sort of film to challenge just about every single type of viewer in a different way, but it is incredibly difficult to look away from all the same.
