Ghost In The Shell: 15 Recent Sci-Fi Movies That Were Far Superior

2. Remainder (2015)

A fascinatingly twisty low-budget riff on Christopher Nolan's Memento, Remainder follows a young man (Tom Sturridge) who attempts to piece his old life back together following a traumatic brain injury, using his considerable financial settlement to elaborately re-enact his scattered memories in the hope of becoming whole again.

While a little on the slow side at times and some may find it too emotionally distant to truly connect with, Remainder takes a tantalising approach to the human experience with memory, while stirring scattered black humour into the mix not to mention benefiting from Sturridge's strong performance.

As a metaphor on filmmaking itself, this is a scrappy little indie drama that just about lands on the outskirts of the sci-fi genre.
